Outage

During class(luckily, it was a breakout room), my dad actually turned off the power. To be fair, he didn't actually know my schedule, and he's seen me come up and down the stairs during breaks but the times were never consistent. In the end, he just said "Oops, but it works now."

Fun fact(I also have no idea why this happened), I had countless power outages this summer. Now the most recent one, the shortest one, and the most unneeded one was the one that struck me the most.

So yes, this was a one-minute break from technology, but it was a wake-up call. When we talked about voice for the first time in class, I barely managed to include bits of it into my story. I stared hard into the screen, and I tried so hard to make it less robot-voiced, but it really never worked out.

Technology was working at the time, but my creativity had an outage instead. Now the reverse is happening: This whole week, technology's just not wanting to be our friend, and it never works when we really need it the most.

Post-outage: It's not like my creativity and voice just flowed out onto the paper like a river, but spending time away from screens just gives me so many new ideas to consider. Ever since virtual school started, all I wanted was time away from the screen. Because of school and homework being all online, the time I really did distance myself from technology was when I was trying to fall asleep. And may I say...those late-night thoughts really got me to the randomest but fascinating topics I hardly thought about during the day.

I guess this mini outage reminded me to stop staring so hard into the screen thinking about one little thing and to start spending some time away to think about many big things. I handled that one sudden minute of being away from the screen during school time, but I somehow couldn't take a couple of minutes to do something else in my own time.

So, maybe technology really is just being stubborn in a way to help us. As far-fetched as that got, I would love another power outage that would last for a little bit longer.

  1. Hi! I found your post really relatable. Like you, I also get the best ideas for my essay when I'm taking time away from technology (usually right before I'm about to fall asleep, and then I wake up and jot down all my notes in my phone). I also like the part where you said "my creativity had an outage instead", it was a nice way to keep the essay's flow and also to explain what you actually felt like when you were in front of technology racking your mind for ideas.
